Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google Maps (7 Fixes)

You search for your own service, in your own city, and your competitor shows up. You don't. That's not bad luck. Google Maps ranks businesses on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. When you're missing, one of those three is broken.
Here are the seven problems we find most often when we audit Google Business Profiles, and how to fix each one.
1. Your profile isn't verified
An unverified profile won't show up reliably in Maps. Log in to your Google Business Profile and look for a "Verify" prompt. If you see one, finish verification first. Nothing else on this list matters until you do.
2. You picked the wrong primary category
Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal on your profile. A plumber listed as "Contractor" instead of "Plumber" will lose to every competitor who chose correctly. Pick the most specific category that describes your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
3. Your profile is incomplete
Missing hours, services, photos or a business description all tell Google your profile is less trustworthy. Fill in every field. Add your services one by one with short descriptions. Upload real photos of your team, your work and your vehicles.
4. Your name, address and phone don't match across the web
Google compares your profile with your website, Yelp, Facebook and directories. If your old phone number or address still lives somewhere, Google gets mixed signals. Make your name, address and phone number (NAP) identical everywhere.
5. You have fewer (or older) reviews than competitors
Reviews are a big part of prominence. If the top 3 businesses have 150 reviews and you have 12, you're not in the same race. Recent reviews matter too. A steady flow of new reviews beats a big batch from two years ago. See our guide on how to get more Google reviews.
6. You're searching from too far away
Distance matters. If you search from home, 15 miles from your office, you may be outside your own ranking radius. Use a rank-tracking grid tool to see where you really show up across your service area.
7. Your profile was suspended or filtered
Keyword-stuffing your business name, using a virtual office address or showing an address as a service-area business can all get a profile suspended. If your profile says "Suspended," fix the violation before requesting reinstatement.
What to do next
Most businesses have two or three of these problems at once, and they're hard to spot from the inside. That's exactly what our free audit is for.
