How to optimize your Google Business Profile in 2026

September 1, 2026·6 min read

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single biggest driver of local calls. For most searches with local intent, the three-result "map pack" sits above every website link — and the businesses there get the majority of the clicks. Here is the process we run for every client.

1. Pick the right primary category

Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal you control. Choose the most specific category that matches your core service, then add secondary categories for everything else you do. Emergency plumber will outrank plumber for urgent searches — specificity wins.

2. Complete every field — to 100%

  • Services and products, each with a keyword-rich description
  • Service area or address, hours (including holiday hours)
  • Attributes: wheelchair access, payment methods, languages spoken
  • A real, local phone number — not a call-tracking number that changes

3. Post every week

Google reads silence as a closed or inactive business. A weekly post — an offer, an update, a photo from a recent job — is a freshness signal that keeps you ranking. It takes ten minutes and most competitors never do it.

4. Turn reviews into a system

Recent, frequent, five-star reviews move rankings and win the click. Ask every happy customer at the moment they are happiest, make it one tap to leave the review, and reply to every review — good or bad — in your own voice.

5. Add real photos

Profiles with fresh, real photography get more calls and direction requests than stock-only listings. Upload a few genuine photos a month with descriptive file names.
