THREE POINTS

How to rank in the Google Maps 3-pack

August 28, 2026·6 min read

When someone searches "near me", Google shows three map results above everything else — the "3-pack". Those three listings capture most of the clicks and calls. Here is how to earn a spot.

How Google picks the three

Google ranks the pack on the same three factors as all local search: relevance, distance, and prominence. You can't move closer to every searcher, but you can win on the two factors you control.

1. Nail relevance

  • A precise primary category that matches your core service
  • Services and description filled with the words customers actually search
  • A website page that reinforces the same service and city

2. Build prominence with reviews

Recency, volume, rating, and keywords inside reviews all feed prominence. A business earning a few fresh reviews every week will climb past one with more total reviews that stopped months ago.

3. Keep your NAP identical everywhere

Your Name, Address, and Phone must match exactly across your site, your profile, and every directory. Conflicting information makes Google trust you less — and trust is prominence.

4. Earn local links and mentions

A mention from a local paper, a chamber of commerce, or a neighboring business tells Google you're a real, established part of the community. These are worth more than dozens of generic directory listings.
